What is a Root Canal?
The procedure of cleaning root canals is known by the term root canal. This procedure is used to repair a tooth that has been damaged or infected. Root canals can often be used to save a tooth. The procedure will be performed by a root canal specialist.
Just below the enamel is the protective Dentin layer. It is soft tissue that contains blood vessels, connective tissue, nerves, and other tissue. This is important for the formation of the root. Once fully developed, the tooth no longer needs the pulp to survive. It will be nourished by the surrounding tissues.
Once the pulp has been removed the canals can then be cleaned, disinfected, and sealed with a sealant. Pulp damage can happen for many reasons.
Steps to Root Canal
Your general dentist might recommend a root canal if severe damage has been done to the tooth. An endodontist, or a specialist in root canals, will perform the procedure. The following are some of the things you can expect:
- A dental X-ray. Your dentist may order radiographs to locate root canals.
- Local anesthesia. This helps to ease pain during surgery. Pulpectomy: This is the procedure that removes the pulp from the affected tooth.
- Filling. After disinfecting and cleaning the roots, a rubber substance called guttapercha is used for filling them. The roots are sealed to prevent further damage.
To prevent further decay, your dentist may recommend that a crown is placed on the affected tooth.
