Rancho Cucamonga Dentists will tell you that bacteria in our mouths and bathrooms can cause infections. It is common to wonder if your toothbrush will stay clean with a simple rinse after brushing.
Rancho Cucamonga Dentists will tell you that toothbrush cleaning is not the same thing as sterilizing. Sanitation is when 99.9% of bacteria are eliminated. All living organisms can be destroyed by sterilization. Is it a mandatory or preferable practice to sanitize your toothbrush?
The American Dental Association’s Suggestions
Rancho Cucamonga Dentists state that no commercial product can sterilize toothbrushes and that it is not necessary. According to the ADA, “There is not enough clinical evidence to support the bacterial growth of toothbrushes to cause specific adverse oral and systemic health effects.”
Bacteria prefers dark, warm, and moist environments. It is possible to have problems with your toothbrush if it is not properly sealed or coated. Our Rancho Cucamonga Dentist recommends that your toothbrush be allowed to air dry in a holder. This will allow you to remove any bristles and other toothbrushes from the toothbrush. It is important to replace your toothbrush every three-to four months. Another thing to remember is not to share toothbrushes.
Keep It Clean
Most people simply rinse the toothbrush head with warm water after they are done brushing. Warm water can be used to rinse the bristles more thoroughly.
Although the ADA states that there is no clinical evidence to show that soaking toothbrushes in antibacterial mouthwash can cause harm, it will not damage them. To clean your toothbrush, you should soak it in antibacterial mouthwash for at least 15 minutes. The bristles could be damaged if the rinse is extended. It is not a good idea to share or reuse the mouthwash.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), advises against using your microwave or dishwasher to disinfect toothbrushes. The CDC also lists ultraviolet devices as possible damage to the toothbrush.
Some exceptions
Rancho Cucamonga Dentists recommend that you take preventative measures if there is an individual in your family who is sick or at higher risk for infection. You can save money by replacing your toothbrushes less often and buying disposable toothbrushes.
Rancho Cucamonga Dentists recommend that you get the Food and Drug Administration approval before using a UV toothbrush sanitizer. A UV sanitizer will not eliminate all germs. You should inspect your toothbrush more often, as ultraviolet light can cause bristles to become damaged.
